the man with the garden...

Charles "Chicken" Lynch, a lifetime resident of Wilson, Oklahoma, had a deep passion for his community and gardening. When he retired as Superintendent of the Oklahoma Department of Transportation in the spring of 1999, he was looking forward to the quite, blissful time of retirement. It lasted a year...

The following summer his granddaughter, Des suggested selling his produce (after all it had been the town's favorite for years). He obviously said yes, but anyone who knew Chicken, knows he would have said yes to anything that little girl suggested.

She was his world and he was hers.

Summer of 2000, Des' Veggies was born under the family pecan tree, a few hundred feet from the garden he had been growing his entire life.  Chicken was instrumental in helping to start, maintain and develop the veggie stand into the family business and tradition it is today.

He believed greatly in giving back, making a difference and planting your roots in the community that raised you. Our beloved matriarch passed away on the morning of March 19, 2015 from a massive heart attack at the age of 71.

The values and mission of Des' Veggies are based on the concrete example Chicken taught all of us. He was a man of action, with little recognition. A man of passion for community and family, and above all a man of faith who happened to grow an incredible harvest.

Lynch Christmas Vacation 2014

Just a little over 3 months before he unexpectedly passed away, we said NO to Christmas gifts and decided (uncharacteristically for our family) to take a trip and give the gift of time together.

How thankful we are for those precious memories.
